About Radford University

Radford University is located in Radford in Virginia, and dates back to 1910 when it was formed at the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Radford was originally founded as a women's college in 1910.

The 191-acre campus is located in a residential area of Radford, which sits between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains.

The university not only offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, but also specialised doctoral programmes in health-related professions.

The university is organised into six undergraduate colleges and a graduate college, which are: College of Humanities and Behavioural Sciences, College of Business and Economics, College of Education and Human Development, College of Health and Human Services, College of Science and Technology, College of Visual and Performing Arts, and the College of Graduate and Extended Education.

Extensive building work and renovation in recent years has occurred across the campus. In 2012, a new building for the College of Business and Economics opened while in 2014 a new Student Fitness Centre opened. As of 2016 nearly all dormitories at Radford have been renovated.

There are plenty of media opportunities available on campus for students to join in with. The Tartan is the entirely student written and produced newspaper while there is also a radio station (Radio Free Radford) and television station (ROC-TV).

There are more than 200 student clubs and organisations based on campus which include different academic fraternities – such as Mathematics, Chemistry and English – while other clubs and societies focus on music and sport such as: Radford Pitches A'capella, Yes & Improv Club, RU Outdoors, and Model United Nations Club.

Athletic teams – known as the Highlanders – compete in the Big South Conference. There are some 19 NCAA varsity sports for men and women to compete in, which include: basketball, tennis, softball, baseball, rugby, volleyball, and track and field.

Notable alumni include Randal J. Kirk, the chairman and chief executive officer of Intrexon, a synthetic biology technology company, Jayma Mays, an American actress and singer who is best known for her role on the Fox musical series Glee, and Goran Nava, a middle distance runner who competed internationally for Serbia in track and field.
