About Goucher College
In a northern Baltimore suburb in Maryland, Goucher College sits on a 287-acre piece of land. It is a liberal arts college offering just over 30 different subject areas.
The college has recently undergone a comprehensive expansion plan with a new residence hall, expansive modern library, and grounds, which contain low hills and include hiking and riding trails through the woods.
There are introductory courses for freshmen to orient them to the campus, as well as college life at Goucher. The university is most well known for its creative writing, dance, and pre-med departments, while other subjects on offer include: digital arts, management, teaching, sustainability, book studies, media studies and anthropology.
Unusually, Goucher College and Susquehanna University are the only colleges in the United States that require a study abroad experience. Either through an internship or a study-abroad experience, students have to fulfill an off-campus learning requirement prior to graduation.
Goucher boasts a variety of student-run clubs across different subject areas ensuring that there is something for everyone. These include: Chemistry Club – the oldest continuously-operating club on campus – Animal Rights Club, Bikram Yoga Club, Bollywood Dance Club, Cooking Club, Film Club, Hip Hop Dance Club, and Knitting and Crocheting Club.
There is also a bi-weekly school newspaper called The Quindecim, and a literary arts journal called Preface ,which are both student written and produced. The Goucher Student Radio is also renowned on campus, for containing a host of student, staff, and faculty-related programming.
Known as the Gophers, athletic teams at the college compete in NCAA Division III, for sports including: lacrosse, soccer, basketball, track and field, cross country, swimming, and tennis.
Notable alumni include Jane Levy, an American actress who is best known for her role as Tessa Altman on the ABC comedy series Suburgatory, John A. Olszewski, Jr., an American politician from Maryland and a member of the Democratic Party, and Jonah Jacob Goldberg, an American conservative syndicated columnist, author and commentator.
