About University of Southern Maine
Founded in 1878, the University of Southern Maine is a public university with three main campuses in a variety of locations in the northeastern state.
Portland is the largest city in Maine, and is home to an academic centre of USM. The School of Nursing at USM Portland Simulation Centre contains four patient rooms and an area in which students can operate on computerised, lifelike models. The city itself is located in picturesque surroundings on Casco Bay, and hosts events such as the annual Greek Festival, and concerts at the Cross Insurance Arena.
Academic study at Portland also includes the Cutler Institute for Health and Social Policy, which focuses on fining evidence-backed solutions to challenges facing both individuals and communities. The Southworth Planetarium offers shows and classes for both students and the local community, and university events are often held at the Hannaford Lecture Hall, which can seat up to 500 people.
USM also has a residential campus in Gorham, with both modern accommodation buildings and historic brick buildings dating back to 1878. Visual and Performing Arts is taught at this campus, with facilities such as an art gallery hosting both student and professional work, and Russell Hall Theatre which hosts a full season of performances.
Lewiston-Auburn College is the third major campus of the USM complex, and focuses on interdisciplinary study. The campus also offers career planning and internship opportunities, and a Student Resource Hub available to USM students regardless of their main academic campus.
Notable alumni of USM include actor Tony Shalhoub, children’s writer Lois Lowry, British MP Kevan Jones, and congresswoman Chellie Pingree. The university motto is ‘Connecting You with Tomorrow’.
