About University of San Diego
Founded in 1949, the University of San Diego is a Catholic affiliated university with a motto that translates from Latin as ‘Send Forth Thy Spirit’. The city itself is a major economic and cultural in California, based on the Mexico border across from the city of Tijuana. Students may enjoy San Diego’s beaches or mild climate, and locations such as the Air & Space Museum, and Zoo.
USD offers over 40 baccalaureate degrees, and study is divided between the College of Arts & Sciences, and schools of Business, Education, Nursing & Health Science, Engineering, Peace Studies, Law, and the Franciscan School of Theology. The School of Continuing and Professional Education is recognised as a Community Engagement Institution by the Carnegie Foundation, and provides both on campus and online graduate degree courses.
The opportunity to study abroad is taken up by more than 70% of undergraduate students at USD. Academic programmes are available through 135 programs in 44 countries in 76 cities, and at the dedicated USD Madrid Centre students can both expand their Spanish language skills and cultural knowledge.
Athletics teams are known as the Toreros (Spanish for ‘bullfighters’), and compete in the NCAA Division I. Football and soccer teams play at the Torero Stadium, which can seat up to 6000 spectators. Sporting alumni of USD include third baseman and outfielder for the Chicago Cubs, Kris Bryant.
The Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice has previously hosted the Kyoto Laureate Symposium, an event awarding in fields for which there is no Nobel Prize.
