About University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (UMD) is one of the five campuses that makes up the University of Massachusetts (UMass).
Located in North Dartmouth, it became apart of UMass in 1991 when Southeastern Massachusetts University merged into the University of Massachusetts system.
The main university campus also hosts the University of Massachusetts School of Law, which offers four-year courses to students hoping to enter the professional legal world.
Aside from the main campus, there are satellite campuses in New Bedford and Fall River, which offer their own specialisms. The campus of New Bedford, for example, offers courses in visual arts, professional and continuing education and marine science and technology.
Sustainability has developed to be a key part of the university’s mission. UMD became the first university in the world to have a sustainability report that met the top level of the worlds most comprehensive, credible and widely used standard in 2011.
There are a variety of clubs and organisations based on campus for students to get involved with. These include: American Sign Language (ASL), French Club, Gaming Society, Graphic Design Club and Paintball Club. There is also a student produced radio station based on campus.
Athletic teams at UMD are known as the Corsairs, and compete in compete in NCAA Division III and the Little East Conference. Sports teams on offer include: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, and track and field.
Notable alumni include Brian Helgeland, an American screenwriter, film producer and director who is most known for writing the screenplays for L.A. Confidential and Mystic River, Pooch Hall, an American television and film actor, rapper and model, and Gregory Yob, an American computer game designer.
