San Antonio is a lively city which is the state’s most popular tourist destination. Its highlights include the Alamo, the scene of a historic 1836 Texas Revolution battle, and the River Walk, a network of paths along the banks of the San Antonio River. The city’s basketball team, the San Antonio Spurs, is one of the National Basketball Association’s most successful, having won five championships between 1999 and 2014 and only missed the playoffs four times in their history. The university’s 135-acre campus is located in the north west of the city.
Alumni include Danny Heap, who earned a place in the institution’s hall of fame for his performances for the St Mary’s Rattlers before winning two World Series as an outfielder, and Felix Stehling, co-founder of Taco Cabana, a fast-food chain with more than 150 branches across the US. Future president Dwight D. Eisenhower coached the American football team in 1916 while a young soldier stationed at nearby Fort Sam Houston.
