About Our Lady of the Lake University
Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) is a Catholic university based in Texas, which has roots dating back to 1895 when it was founded by the Sisters of Divine Providence – a religious institute with origins in France.
The university was the first San Antonio institution of higher education to receive regional accreditation, and its Worden School of Social Service is the oldest school of Social Work in Texas.
The university is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor, master and doctoral degrees.
In 1978, the university introduced a Weekend College at the San Antonio campus, which was the first programme of its kind in the region to offer adult students an option for completing a degree while maintaining full-time employment.
On campus, there are a variety of activities for students to get involved with. From mariachi concerts to art openings, plays and lectures – the list is endless.
Clubs are an integral part of the OLLU experience, with organisations such as: Chem Club, Criminal Justice Club, Music Ensemble Association, Worden Social Work Organisation, Earth Club, Freedom Fighters Gaming Club, and the Mizuumi Anime Club.
Sports teams at OLLU are known as the Saints, and they participate in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and they primarily compete in the Red River Athletic Conference. Sports on offer include: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, and track and field, softball and volleyball.
Notable alumni include Naomi R. Gonzalez, a prominent attorney and politician, Ciro Davis Rodriguez, a former U.S. Representative for Texas's 23rd congressional district, and Emma Tenayuca, an American labour leader, union organiser and educator.
