About Marywood University
Marywood University is a Catholic liberal arts institution in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Founded in 1915 as the first female Catholic college in the state, it is now coeducational. Its first international students attended the college in 1917. It gained university status in 1997.
Marywood is the first North East Pennsylvanian institution to teach doctoral programmes. There are more than 100 programmes to choose from in total, including history, finance, advertising, digital media, political science, environmental science and music therapy.
Nicknamed the Electric City because of its early use of electric lights in trams, locomotives and steel mills in the 1880s, Scranton is 115 miles from Philadelphia and 120 miles from New York City. A historic railway hub, it is the setting of American sitcom The Office, based on the Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant comedy of the same name.
Its sustainable 140-acre campus has more than 100 different species of trees. Recent additions have included the School of Architecture, School of Business and Global Innovation and the Motherhouse and Seminary Morgan Memorial Garden, built to mark the 1971 fire which destroyed the Motherhouse Building, which hospitalised many.
Marywood is the alma mater of Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, and voice actor Michele Knotz, who has provided the voices for four Pokémon characters among other roles.
