The Hong Kong Polytechnic University – Graduate School

The Graduate School (GS) plays a pivotal role in managing and developing research postgraduate (RPg) and undergraduate (Ug) research education at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). Since its establishment in 2020, GS has expanded to become the fastest-growing graduate school in Hong Kong in the 2022/23 academic year.

With a rich history spanning over 80 years, PolyU has been consistently ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide. The University prides itself on its innovative approach to achieving scholarly success.

RPg Education

  1. Diverse PhD and MPhil Programmes

Across six faculties and three schools, PolyU offers a wide range of PhD and MPhil programmes in different disciplines, including business, construction and environment, engineering, health and social sciences, humanities, science, design, fashion and textiles, and hotel and tourism management. Our niche research areas span a broad spectrum, covering deep space exploration, AI and robotics, advanced manufacturing, smart cities, carbon neutrality, healthcare and food security.

  1. Holistic Research Education

Beyond discipline-specific coursework, PolyU’s research education is designed to equip students with fundamental academic knowledge and all-round transferable skills essential for their personal growth and future career success. Throughout their study journey, students have access to various global learning opportunities and extensive networking platforms, enabling them to expand their horizons and build valuable connections within and beyond academia.

  1. Exceptional Supervision

PolyU is home to many world-renowned scholars from diverse disciplines who can provide expert research guidance. They have secured prestigious funding from the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong and international bodies. Their innovative inventions have also won accolades at global exhibitions. In 2023, over 200 PolyU scholars were ranked among the top 2% most-cited scientists by Stanford University. Furthermore, 15 PolyU academics were recognised in the list of Highly Cited Researchers 2023 by Clarivate Analytics.

  1. Robust Research Environment

The thriving research ecosystem at PolyU is a driver of academic excellence and innovation. A network of local and national research resources and facilities has been established, creating an environment that can foster interdisciplinary and translational research.

Complementing this environment is a vibrant student community with diverse talents. Currently, GS nurtures more than 3,000 RPg students of 38 nationalities, with non-local students comprising 90% of the total population. Our RPg alumni network also exceeds 6,000 members. Students benefit from this close-knit community of research students and alumni throughout their academic journey.

  1. Vibrant Campus Surroundings

Situated in the heart of Hong Kong, PolyU offers a vibrant environment that caters to the diverse needs of our students. It is a nexus of convenient living, connected transportation, vivid attractions, and broad artistic and cultural offerings. The lively and scenic campus surroundings provide a unique complement to academic life.

Undergraduate Research

  1. College of Undergraduate Researchers and Innovators (CURI)

Research starts with undergraduates at PolyU. CURI allows Ug students to undertake small-scale research projects under the supervision of experienced academics. This ensures a seamless transition into RPg education for students at PolyU.

  1. Undergraduate Research and Innovation Scheme (URIS)

URIS is a prestigious two-year programme that promotes Ug research and nurtures future scholars. This structured programme provides integrated Ug research training through a range of activities, empowering students to build research records, establish research networks and gain field exposure. URIS students will be offered financial support including scholarships and project grants.
