About Coppin State University
Coppin State University is a public institution in Baltimore, Maryland’s largest city.
A residential university with a liberal arts emphasis which offers more than 60 programmes for more than 3500 undergraduates and postgraduates.
Integrated into the state higher education system in the 1950s, it was initially a teaching college, but in 1963, its degree-awarding powers were extended to students, and the first graduated four years later. The change also saw the institution rename itself as Coppin State College, which it remained until 2004. CSU now has four colleges and four schools, all located in the north west of the city, four miles from the waterfront.
One of the most populous cities in the region, in one of the most densely-populated states, Baltimore is a major seaport with a booming cultural scene and a long history of immigration.
Home to two top division sports teams, the Baltimore Ravens (American football) and Baltimore Orioles (baseball), it was the residence of Babe Ruth, widely regarded as the best baseball player of all time. Other high-profile Baltimore residents have included writer Edgar Allen Poe.
The university’s sports teams, the Coppin State Eagles, compete in the highest division of college sport.
CSU alumni include Stephanie Ready, the first woman to coach a men’s professional basketball team, and later a TV journalist.
