About Chatham University
Chatham University is a liberal arts college with a main campuses in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Opened in 1869 and historically an institute for women students, Chatham became fully co-educational at all levels in 2015.
Sustainability is a core element of the Chatham ethos, and the Eden Hall Campus in Richland, PA is a 388 acre site dedicated to economic and environmental development, and contains over 400 solar panels generating 126,000 kW hours a year. The Falk School on campus offers a bachelors and masters in sustainability, and a master of arts in food studies.
There are over 40 undergraduate majors and 20 graduate programmes available at Chatham, in the fields of sustainability, the health & lab sciences, business, and the arts & humanities. Minors are offered in 25 undergraduate subjects, such as Creative Writing and Management Information Systems.
International exchange is actively encouraged at Chatham, and the university offers a one-time study abroad voucher to assist with costs. Overseas students wishing to study at Chatham may take advantage of its thriving English Language Programme, which comes with 14 weeks of instruction plus orientation and examination sessions. In previous years Chatham students have studied in areas as varied as Brazil, Sweden, Indonesia, and Taiwan.
The most celebrated alumnae of Chatham is Rachel Carson, the conservationist whose book Silent Spring brought environmentalism into the American public consciousness. The Rachel Carson Institute on campus hosts seminars, lectures and guest speakers on issues in the environment, and university mascot Carson the Cougar is named in her honour.
In previous years, Chatham students have acted in collaboration with local non-profit 412 Food Rescue, which reclaims ‘unsellable’ products from retailers and donates to soup kitchens and community programmes.
