About Capital University

Capital University is an arts and research university in Ohio. Although originally founded as the Theological Seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Ohio in 1830, it later was associated with that synod's successor, the American Lutheran Church.

Capital University is the oldest university in Central Ohio and is one of the oldest and largest Lutheran-affiliated universities in North America.

The university has undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as an established law school. Courses on offer include: law, sciences – which include chemistry, biology and environmental sciences – public relations, theatre studies, history, nursing and criminology for example.

Perhaps the university’s most well established programme is music – with renowned members of faculty including James Swearingen. It offers diverse modules such as Keyboard Pedagogy, performance, music technology and jazz studies.

Capital University features more than 70 student organisations, which include some 13 fraternities and sororities, arts and media organisations, cultural organisations, honours societies, campus programming, religious organisations, and government and social organisations. Some examples include: Young Life, PRSSA, Circle K, ReCap Literary Magazine, the Chimes, intramural sports, and numerous music organisations that non-music and music graduates can perform in.

There is a student-run radio station – WXCU Radio – which began in 2007 streaming online only. Now, students have the opportunity to host their own radio show and interview nationally touring acts.

The university library consists of four floors where students can find books, articles and other historical artefacts. The fourth floor is the home to the Schumacher Gallery – which houses the campuses art collection. While, the second floor has a large collection of music, including a vinyl section.

Capital University’s sports teams participate in a large number of sports and plays within the Ohio Athletic Conference in the NCAA's Division III. Under the name Capital Crusaders there are a large number of sports teams, which include: baseball, basketball, cross country, tennis, track and field, lacrosse and soccer.

Notable alumni include Gregory Lashutka, a lawyer who served as the 51st mayor of Columbus, Ohio, Arnett Howard, an African American jazz musician, journalist, teacher, author, historian, and official ambassador for Columbus, and Richard Robb, an American politician and lawyer in West Virginia who gained notoriety during the 2004 United States presidential election.
