About California State University, Monterey Bay
Founded in 1994, California State University-Monterey Bay (CSUMB) is the second youngest of the 23-member California State University system and is located on the site of decommissioned army base Fort Ord in Monterey County, California.
Over the years the university has continued to grow, developing study programs and gradually offering more opportunities for students. Today more than 7,000 students are enrolled in one of the 25 undergraduate and seven graduate majors available at CSUMB.
Situated just one miles from the shores of Monterey Bay, the university is shared by the neighbouring cities of Marina and Seaside.
The campus is full of reminders of Ford Ord’s former purpose – for example, old motorpool buildings have been used to create the university’s Visual and Public Art Department, and some of the former army barracks have been renovated to create university residence halls, where approximately 45 percent of the university population reside.
The university has also developed a distance learning program, to allow students to study without regularly attending the campus.
Two university projects – the Math Huge program and the CSIT-in-3 program which was developed in collaboration with Hartnell College – have been incredibly successful, with CSUMB winning awards and a total of $8million for their innovation. A cooperative agreement with NASA means the university is involved with several research projects too, including coral reef monitoring and carbon modelling.
Since the first university classes began on August 28, 1995, more than 10,000 people have graduated from CSUMB and many of them have forged very successful careers in a variety in different industries.
