About Bowling Green State University
Bowling Green State University (BGSU) is a research-led university, located in Ohio, United States, and home to over 17,000 students.
Founded in 1910 as a teacher training college, the institution had just 304 students enrolled in its first year. It did not attain full university status until 1935 and over the years has grown considerably, today standing as one of the largest higher education institutions in the state.
While there is a small satellite campus, known as BGSU Firelands, located in Huron, Ohio, the main BGSU campus is on the northeast side of the small town of Bowling Green in northern Ohio. The 1,338-acre campus is comprised of 116 buildings, and provides accommodation for more than 6,000 students, as well as a food court, a 250-seat cinema, ballrooms, pubs, an ice arena, a golf course, and a host of other impressive facilities.
The university offers more than 200 degree programs at bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral level through eight colleges, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business Administration, the College of Education and Human Development, the College of Health and Human Services, the College of Musical Arts, the College of Technology, Architecture and Applied Engineering, BGSU Firelands, and the Graduate College.
BGSU was also the first university in the United States to offer doctoral programs in photochemical science and applied philosophy.
The university is also home to a ghost, known as Alice, who haunts two of the university theatres. While her identity is unknown, it has become a tradition at BGSU to leave an empty seat for Alice at all performances, and there have been numerous students who have claimed to see her during shows.
