About Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences
Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences has a history that dates back to 1881 when the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry of Lvov Polytechnic and the Veterinary School of Medicine were founded. In 1945 the Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine were established at the combined University and Polytechnic. These two faculties became part of the Agricultural University of Wroclaw in 1951. In 2006 it was renamed Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences.
The university is the only agricultural university in southwest Poland. It is located in the city of Wroclaw, which sits along the Odra River. Wroclaw’s rich history dates back over a thousand years, throughout which it has been part of the Kingdom of Poland, the Kingdom of Bohemia, the Kingdom of Hungary, the Habsburg Monarchy of Austria, and the Kingdom of Prussia and Germany. The city is a popular tourist destination thanks to its Gothic architecture, riverside parks and 130 bridges.
The university is organised into five faculties: biology and animal science; biotechnology and food science; environmental engineering and geodesy; life sciences and technology; and veterinary medicine. Each faculty is divided into departments, which offer both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
Throughout the academic year the university carries out various research projects, many of which are financially supported by the Polish Committee for Scientific Research (KBN). The university publishes its findings in scientific journals, which are read both nationally and internationally. One of the university’s most recent research projects is ‘Grow Green’, which focuses on sustainable economic growth and healthy citizens and environments.
