Founded in 1981, the University of Macau (UM) was the predecessor of the private University of East Asia, which was officially renamed University of Macau in 1991 as a public university. Through the years of development, UM has become a leading and the only public comprehensive university in Macao.

In 2017, 91.3 per cent of UM graduates with a bachelor’s degree either found a job or were accepted for further studies (with those in the latter category accounting for 14.9 per cent). Of those who successfully found a job, 90 per cent did so within three months of graduation

International Faculty
UM boasts a strong faculty team comprised of over 600 scholars recruited from more than 13 countries around the world. Many of the faculty members have earned prestigious titles such as fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, member of the Portuguese Academy of Sciences, fellow of the American Society for Metals, fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, fellow of the American Physical Society, fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, fellow of the American Educational Research Association, president of the IEEE’s Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society, fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences, and Chang Jiang Scholar Chair Professor (Ministry of Education).
Faculty Support
The university has established a Centre for Teaching and Learning Enhancement, which organizes workshops and training courses on a regular basis so that faculty members can share teaching experience, learn from one another, and improve their teaching pedagogies.
Internal funding from the university’s research committee has been set up to enable faculty members to obtain necessary financial support to conduct their research. UM faculty members can also obtain external funding from local and national entities in support of their research activities.
Staff Benefits
To help settle into Macao, UM provides on campus accommodation to eligible faculty members. In addition, faculty members and their eligible family members shall enjoy medical benefits as provided by appointed medical institutions.
The cost of living in Macao is relatively lower compared to other prominent cities in Asia such as Hong Kong and Singapore. Moreover, all residents and non-residents working in Macao enjoy much lower tax rates than in other economically developed Asian countries. The local income tax rate is on a progressive scale and the current maximum rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
