About Utah Valley University
Founded in 1941, UVU is a public university in the city of Orem, north-central Utah. In 2015 UVU became the largest university in the state, with over 33,000 students enrolled at the time. The city itself has two higher learning institutions ensuring a ‘college town’ feel, a low cost of living, and is considered one of the safest cities in the nation.
There are five colleges at UVU, and schools of Arts, Education, and Business. The College of Aviation and Public Services incorporates both a Police and Fire & Rescue Academy. It’s flight training facility is located between the Rocky Mountains and Utah Lake, and offers FRASCA flight simulation and Professional Pilot degrees.
The general college at UVU offers courses in Basic Composition and a Free Health Programme, as well as a department of English Language Learning, assisting non-native speakers in writing and speaking English in an academic context.
The Department of Theatrical Arts puts on around five performances a season, and previous shows include The Wizard of Oz and Fiddler on the Roof. The Grande Ballroom is a 10,384 square foot facility with 30 foot projection screens and the latest sound and lighting design. A famous alumni of UVU is professional on Dancing With The Stars, Chelsie Hightower.
The UVU Library is known as the Digital Learning Centre and received accreditations for green construction, and includes a common area with over 90 computers.
Athletics teams are known as the Wolverines, and compete in the Western Athletic Conference. There are a total of fourteen sports programmes, including wrestling for men and volleyball for women. Basketball is played at the UCCU Centre, which can seat up to 8,500 spectators.
