About University of Oklahoma
The University of Oklahoma (OU) is a research university located in Norman in Oklahoma. With roots dating back to 1890, the university now offers a wealth of different subjects for students to enjoy.
Its main campus is located in Norman, about 20 miles from Oklahoma City. Norman has a wide variety of neighbourhoods, with different restaurants, art galleries, while it is also home to some of the oldest buildings in Oklahoma.
There is also a health sciences centre based in Oklahoma City itself, as well as a secondary Health Sciences campus in Tulsa. Meanwhile the University of Oklahoma–Tulsa Schusterman Centre, which offers a wide variety of specialist programmes, is based in Tulsa.
Internationally, the university owns a monastery in Italy, which since 2016 has been used as a permanent campus for study abroad students. The university expects that one in five OU students who study abroad will go through the Arezzo campus. There are also study centres in Mexico, Brazil and, in the near future, Turkey.
Students are able to achieve bachelor, masters and doctorate degrees. There are a vast array of subjects on offer including Atmospheric Sciences, Education, Energy Science, Business, Engineering, Literature, Foreign Languages and Fine Arts.
UO also engaged in research activities in various different fields, although it is particularly well known for the work it has achieved in the field of meteorology.
Students can participate in a huge range of student organisations, as well as a student run radio and television station. Clubs include: Chess Club, Expressive Movement Initiative, Men’s Glee Club, Pre-Law Society, Society of Physics Students and Women in Business Association.
Athletic teams are nicknamed the Sooners, and compete as members of the NCAA's Division I and in the Big 12 Conference. Varsity sports teams include: football, athletics, wrestling, rowing, baseball, basketball, track and field, gymnastics and golf.
Notable alumni include James Garner, an actor, producer, and voice artist who starred in several television series spanning more than five decades, Adrian Peterson, a football running back for the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League, and Fred Haise, an aeronautical engineer, former naval aviator, fighter pilot, test pilot, and NASA astronaut who is one of only 24 people to have flown to the Moon.
