University of Nebraska Medical Center
About University of Nebraska Medical Center
The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) has been part of the University of Nebraska System for more than 100 years.
It consists of seven colleges covering medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry and public health, and a number of research institutes.
Almost half of the medical professionals working in Nebraska are graduates of UNMC.
There are less than 4,000 students currently enrolled, promoting a tight-knit community and a low student-to-staff ratio.
The faculties and colleges are spread across five campuses in some of Nebraska’s landmark hometowns. The flagship campus is in Omaha, while dentistry and nursing students share a campus with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Students from around the world attend the university, and there are a number of diverse cultural festivals throughout the year.
The university has been undergoing significant growth and expansion over the last few decades. Projects to set up new facilities and medical centers focus on patient care and enhancing educational opportunities.
In the last few years a ‘center for successful aging’ and an institute for eye research have opened and begun to run clinical trials.
Since UNMC is the only public academic health science center in Nebraska, it commits to various outreach initiatives to promote access to healthcare across the state. In particular, the university proactively recruits students to practice medicine in rural areas or those that do not have easy access to healthcare.
The university, and its partner Nebraska Medicine, have an economic impact of $4.2 billion annually.
