About University of Louisiana at Monroe

The University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) is a public university based in the state of Louisiana.

It is one of nine campuses within the University of Louisiana System and dates back to 1931 when it was formed as Ouachita Parish Junior College. In 1969, it granted doctoral degrees for the first time and was elevated to university status as Northeast Louisiana University (NLU). In 1999, the university was renamed to its present name.

ULM is made up of a variety of separate Colleges, which include: arts, education and sciences, business and social sciences, health and pharmaceutical sciences, and a graduate school.

Some of the most popular courses on offer include: management, pharmacy, nursing, computer science and psychology. ULM also offers courses, which are taught wholly online in subjects such as history, criminal justice, marketing and counselling. 

ULM has a variety of clubs and organisations on campus for students to participate in. Many of which are award-winning groups, which include the Sound of Today marching band and the competition cheerleading squad.

Athletic teams at ULM participate as a member of NCAA Division I in the Sun Belt Conference. Varsity sports teams include: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, softball, soccer, volleyball, golf, tennis, and track and field.

The water ski team at ULM is perhaps the university’s most successful collegiate sport, having won 26 National Collegiate Water Skiing Association championships since 1979.

Notable alumni include Bill Pryor Jr., a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals, Orlando Bobo, an American football player who played the position of guard for three National Football League teams, and Jamie Mayo, the mayor of Monroe.
