About University of Benghazi

The University of Benghazi is located in Libya.

The university has build a range of new facilities in the past few years including 10 lecture halls provided by the national government in 2021 and projects funded by the United Nations including Libya’s only purpose-built rugby pitch.

Just 31 students were enrolled when the university first opened in 1955. From 1968 construction began on its 625 hectare site in the district of Garyounis including a central administration block with a gold dome and a library which holds more than one million volumes.

The university was given its current name in 2011.

Today it has 30 colleges on two campuses in Benghazi, with nine satellite bases elsewhere in Eastern Libya. Among the newer colleges are physical education and languages, both founded in 2019. The college of agriculture, which existed independently for 29 years before joining the university in 2004, focusses on the issues facing farmers in arid and semi-arid regions.
