About SUNY Oswego

The State University of New York at Oswego is a lakeside college with an excellent reputation.

A public institution founded in 1861, SUNY Oswego’s 700-acre rural campus sits on the banks of Lake Ontario, which separates the US from Canada, and is 90 miles from the Canadian border by land. The small coastal city of Oswego is 40 miles north east of Syracuse, an economic and educational powerhouse.

Initially the Oswego Primary Teachers’ Training School, the college gained the ability to confer degrees in 1942, when it became Oswego State Teachers’ College. In the early 1960s, it began to offer a range of courses in the arts and sciences. It then proceeded to grow its student numbers and campus rapidly, with the institution now comprising more than 8,000 students, 55 buildings and 100 degree programmes. Built in 1913, the longest-surviving building on campus is Sheldon Hall, which now hosts events and houses a number of students. Most SUNY Oswego students live on campus.

Alumni include Jerry Seinfeld, the award-winning comedian and co-creator of seminal sitcom Seinfeld, which he starred in as himself, appearing in all of its 180 episodes, Al Roker, the broadcaster and television personality best-known for being the weather anchor on NBC’s Today Show, and Robin Curtis, the actor who played Lieutenant Saavik in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
