About Suez University
Suez University was set up as a government university after a presidential decree was issued in 2012, but prior to that had been a branch of the Suez Canal University since 2006.
It was the first university to be established by presidential decree after the January 25th uprising in Egypt in 2011. It began with six faculties and now has 12, which comprise the faculty of petroleum and mining engineering; the faculty of education; the faculty of industrial education; the faculty of commerce; the faculty of science; the faculty of fish resources; the faculty of arts; the faculty of economics and political sciences; the faculty of computer and information science; the faculty of media and mass communication; the faculty of medicine and the faculty of engineering.
There are plans to add a faculty of pharmacy, a faculty of dentistry, a faculty of physical therapy and a Technical Institute of Nursing, as well as a university hospital. The University of Suez has about 12,350 students.
The university has opened classes for the College of Education in Tur Sinai as a nucleus of new colleges that will pave the way to the establishment of the branch in Tur City, South Sinai. This forms part of its national commitment and responsibility to reconstruct Sinai.
Suez, which is Al-Suways in Arabic, is a port at the head of the Gulf of Suez and at the southern exit of the Suez Canal in Northern Egypt. A naval and trade centre, Suez is 130km from Cairo, with the capital accessible by both train and road. It is known for its petroleum refineries, canal workshops and an artificial fertiliser plan. It’s also a well-known departure point for the hajj, the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca.
