About Siena College

Named after Saint Bernardino of Siena, Siena College is a private, Roman Catholic liberal arts college founded in 1937.

The college opened in the New York suburb of Albany in 1937 as a Catholic college for men, and while enrollment dropped dramatically during the Second World War, the college quickly expanded in the 1950s and 1960s, increasing the number of majors available and adding several new buildings, becoming fully coeducational in 1969.

The university offers 31 majors through the School of Business, the School of Liberal Arts and the School of Science, all of which are located on the main university campus.

Today the 174-acre suburban campus houses 80 percent of Siena College students in six residence halls, and there are also two college affiliated townhouse complexes on campus too.

There are more than 80 student clubs and organisations on campus, and notable buildings include Siena Hall, which appears on the college logo, as well as the J. Spencer and Patricia Standish Library and the Marcelle Athletic Complex.

The university sports teams, known as the Siena Saints, compete in the NCAA Division I with the most well known team being the men’s basketball squad, who have appeared in six NCAA Tournaments and have produced players including Marcus Faison and Kenny Hasbrouck.

Other notable former students include Pulitzer Prize-winning author William J Kennedy, FoxNews correspondent Ed Henry, George Deukmejian, the 35th Governor of California as well as Wayne LaPierre, CEO of the National Rifle Association.
