About Shinshu University
The motto of Shinshu is "rooted in the community, opening up the world".
The main campus is located in the Nagano Prefecture in central Japan, known for its stunning natural landscapes and being host to the 1988 Winter Olympics. Upon becoming a university in 1949, Shinshu incorporated a number of learning institutions, giving students a wide range of options to study at the university to this day. Schools at Sinshu include the Departments of Environment and Safety and Hygiene, both housed in the Centre for Health and Safety Management. There is a university hospital with more than 700 beds at Shinshu, focusing on both general treatment and specific research.
There are also multiple campuses at Shinshu, including bases in the Japanese cities of Matsumoto and Ueda.
The university’s Institute of Carbon Science and Technology is a world leader in its research. This includes its work in so-called nano carbons, which can enhance material for products ranging from baseball bats to damascus steel.
Through a collaboration Shinshu University's Interdisciplinary Graduate Schools of Science and Technology the university has developed a fiver year course in fibre sciences, which will combine management training with cutting edge research to create students who can go on to become leaders in the field.
