About Plymouth Marjon University

Plymouth Marjon University’s origins date back to 1840 when St John’s College was established in Battersea, London. In 1841 St Mark’s College was founded in Chelsea, London. In 1923 these two colleges merged together to form a single institution in Chelsea, the College of St Mark and St John. In 1973 the college relocated to Plymouth because it outgrew its Chelsea campus. The college gained full university status in 2013 and became Plymouth Marjon University.

The university is divided into seven subject areas, which include arts and humanities, business, education and communities, health and wellbeing, law and criminology, sport, physical education and coaching, and teacher training. Each area offers a wide range of both undergraduate and graduate courses.

Outside of the classroom the university encourages students to make the most out of campus life. There are numerous clubs and societies available for students to join from lacrosse to weight lifting, and Muay Thai to snow sports. The Marjon Student Union is responsible for overseeing these clubs and ensures that student life is as rich and diverse.

The university is located in Plymouth, a port city in Devon, southwest England. Plymouth is known as Britain’s Ocean City, boasting a combination of beautiful beaches, coastlines and rolling moors. The city has a rich history that can be explored in The Barbican. This district with its cobbled streets is where Sir Francis Drake celebrated his victory over the Spanish Armada and is the departure point of the famous Mayflower. Plymouth is also rich with culture, with many theatres.
