About National Taiwan Ocean University

The National Taiwan Ocean University, as the name suggests, is well known for teaching and research in maritime science - a specialism which makes it unique among Taiwanese universities.

In 1953 the university opened its doors as the Provincial Taiwan Maritime Technology College. The university has developed a broad range of faculties and expanded to offer bachelors and master's degrees, as well as PhDs. It was renamed the National Taiwan Ocean University in 1989.

The university is building on its expertise in maritime fields and branching out into general studies, with the aim of becoming an internationally respected university in all fields.

From its founding as a purely marine education institution, the university now has six colleges: Maritime Science and Management, Life Sciences, Ocean Science and Resource, Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Humanities and Social Sciences.

The university is perfectly situated for studying the ocean, based as it is in the port town of Keelung. The East China Sea is right on the university’s doorstep.

There are also several facilities built by the university which are open to use by students for practical lessons. They include a research aquarium and a shore field station.

Keelung is famous for its night market, where vendors sell local delicacies for a handful of change. The city has easy access to several national parks, while the capital city, Taipei, with its wealth of museums, festivals and restaurants, is an hour away by bus or train.
