About Muhlenberg College
Muhlenberg College is a private liberal arts college affiliated to the Evangelical Lutheran Church. The college was founded as a seminary in 1848 by the Reverend Samuel K Brobst. It was named for Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, who established the German Lutheran faith in the United States in the 18th century. His great-grandson, Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg, served as President of the college from 1867 to 1876.
Over 40 academic majors, minors and certifications are offered at Muhlenberg in the fields of arts, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. Students can also take interdisciplinary courses such as film studies, German studies, sustainability studies and women’s and gender studies.
Muhlenberg also has several cooperative programmes, offered in partnership with a second university. These programmes allow students to begin their studies at Muhlenberg and transfer to a professional course. For example, students can move directly from Muhlenberg to dental school.
The Center for Ethics is Muhlenberg’s institute for the discussion of philosophical questions relating to moral problems. Each semester the centre picks a new topic to investigate. Past themes have included war and peacebuilding, sex and pleasure and patriotism.
The college is located in Allentown, a city in Pennsylvania, situated between New York City and Philadelphia. A business incubator, the Bridgeworks, has drawn start-ups to Allentown over recent years, creating employment and internship opportunities in fields including technology, design and biology.
