About Marquette University

Marquette University is a high-ranking Catholic institution in Milwaukee, the largest city in Wisconsin.

A private Jesuit university named after French explorer and missionary Rev. Jacques Marquette, it was established as an all-male liberal arts school in 1881. It has embodied Jesuit religious and intellectual traditions to this day. In 1909, Marquette became the first Catholic coeducational institution worldwide.

The founding place of Harley-Davidson, perhaps the world’s best-known motorcycle manufacturer, Milwaukee is on the banks of Lake Michigan. A fusion between the rural and urban Midwest, it is popular for its breweries, museums and festivals. Marquette is located just west of the town centre, two miles from Milwaukee Bay.

Marquette has over 150 programmes spread across more than 10 schools and colleges, including a highly-rated online computer science course.

It has won top-level college titles in three sports, including basketball, and several former Marquette players have gone on to NBA careers. These include three-time NBA champion and 12-time all-star Dwyane Wade, and Doc Rivers, a point guard and, later, coach who led the Boston Celtics to their 2008 championship, where they defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in the finals. Politicians to have attended Marquette include Joseph McCarthy, one of the best known post-war senators and opponents of communism, and Scott Walker, the Republican governor of Wisconsin who stood for his party’s 2016 presidential nomination.
