About Lander University
Lander University is an undergraduate based collegiate in the town of Greenwood, South Carolina. The institution was founded in 1872 by Methodist minister Samuel Lander, for whom the university is named. Originally a college for women, Lander is now fully co-educational.
The four colleges of Lander offering over sixty areas of study are Arts & Humanities, Business & Public Affairs, Education, and Science & Mathematics. One of the most popular courses at the university is Biology, which offers a core curriculum as well as a wide range of engaging selective courses. Laboratory research is an important part of the genetics emphasis, which is the first of its kind in South Carolina. Lander also has master’s programmes in Montessori Education, Nursing, and Teaching.
Athletics teams compete in the Peach Belt Conference and the NCAA Division II, playing under the name Bearcats and in the university colours of blue and gold. As part of the extensive Jeff May complex are 12 tennis courts, which are used for the university’s men’s and women’s programmes. The Chandler Fitness Centre is open to all students, and contains such facilities as an indoor track and racquetball courts.
As part of an extensive study abroad programme, Lander has 27 partnerships with colleges in Asia. For Lander home students wishing to study abroad, the university has a strong relationship with the University of Winchester in southern England, and past students have also enjoyed summer programmes in locations such as Chile, Peru, Spain and Korea. Within the US, the Washington Intern Student programme gives students work experience opportunities at political institutions while being accommodated in housing on Capitol Hill.
