About Lakeland University
Lakeland University is a liberal arts college offering undergraduate and graduate degrees, based in the small town of Howards Grove, southeast Wisconsin. The institution was known as Mission House College upon its founding in 1862, then Lakeland College from 1956 until acquiring the University title in 2016.
There are thirty-four majors and twenty-two minors available at Lakeland. Of the four education programmes, Early Childhood & Middle Adolescence has a minor course incorporated into its study. Lakeland is the only four year college in the state of Wisconsin to offer an Aviation minor, a course that leads to a private pilot certificate upon completing 31 hours of study, most of which time shall be spent in the air in small aircraft such as a Cirrus SR-20. LURE is a ten week summer programme offering undergraduates the chance to engage in an intensive science research project in collaboration with a member of faculty.
There are three graduate master’s degrees available at Lakeland, in Counselling, Business Administration and Education. All are tailored for working adults and will teach classes on evenings or Saturdays, over 14 week semesters in the autumn and 10 week summer semesters.
Varsity teams at Lakeland are known as the Muskies, and an anthropomorphised version of the pike fish sporting a hook in one hand makes up the team badge. Playing in the university colours of blue and gold, ten men’s and eight women’s sports teams compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III.
The university newspaper is known as the Lakeland Mirror, producing its first print edition in 1936 and launching a website in 2012. Editorials at the newspaper have ranged from comment on national issues such as the controversy over police shootings, and suggested amendments to school life at Lakeland.
