About Lake Superior State University
Lake Superior State University is a liberal arts college in Michigan, based in the town of Sault Ste. Marie which stands on the border with Canada. The regional centre at Petoskey offers the chance for students to learn while remaining in their local community, and a bachelor’s degree from LSSU can also be earned at North Central Michigan College.
There is a broad range of degree programmes to select from at LSSU, with seven different specialties within Business Administration and a course such as Parks and Recreation making use of the college’s spectacular natural surroundings. The LSSU Fire Science Program was the first internationally accredited bachelor's degree in the US, and teaches students skills in fire protection and investigation, and is often accompanied by a Minor in Paramedic Technology.
Sport and athletics play a huge part of the LSSU experience, especially the Lakers men’s ice hockey team, three time victors of the NCAA Division I national championships. As part of hockey tradition, the bell at the gym entrance to Norris Centre is rung upon each home victory for the Lakers, and during matches at the Taffy Abel Arena a genuine ship’s horn is bellowed upon each home team goal. Including hockey there are six men’s and six women’s varsity teams at LSSU, as well as an annual snowmobile race held on campus at the first Saturday of February.
Since 1976, the Banished Words List has been published at LSSU on New Year’s Day, detailing the previous year’s most aggravating phrases and words. The 2016 list included ‘manspreading’ and ‘vape’, and the phrase ‘break the internet’.
