About Kurume University
Founded in 1946, Kurume University is a private university in the city of Kurume on the island of Kyushi, Fukuoka prefecture, Japan.
The roots of the university can be traced back to 1928, when Kyushu Medical School, its precursor, was founded, but it came into being with the establishment of the faculty of commerce.
Today, the university is made up of 13 departments over six undergraduate faculties of literature, economics, commerce and law, as well as the school of medicine. There are five graduate schools of comparative studies of international cultures and societies, psychology, commerce, medicine and the professional school of law. It also includes the Institute of Foreign Language Education.
The university is spread out over two main campuses: the older Asahi-machi campus, which is situated on the south bank of the Chikugo River, and the Mii Campus, which is in the east of Kurume. The Kurume University Beijing Educational Exchange Center is in Beijing, China.
There are 21 research institutes, such as the Institutes of Comparative Studies of International Culture and Societies, Foreign Language Education, Industrial Economies and The International Center.
There are also two attached hospitals, a high school and a junior high school in Kurume city.
The school of medicine incoming class comprises about 115 students who study on a six-year programme. The school of nursing admits about 110 students each year for a four-year course.
Overall, there are nearly 7,000 undergraduate students at Kurume University, over 300 graduate students. There are also nearly 50 students on the one-year and 18-month Intensive Japanese Courses.
