About Johnson State College

One of five colleges in the Vermont State College higher education system, Johnson State College (JSC) is a small liberal arts institution situated in a rural part of northern Vermont.

The college, like the town in which it is located, is named after American jurist William Samuel Johnson. It began in 1828 as an elementary and secondary school but in 1866 it was designated as a Normal School, designed exclusively for teacher training.

The college’s role as a teacher training institution lasted for almost a century until in 1962 it assumed its current name, broadening the study programs available and in recent decade the university has expanded to accommodate the increasing number of new fields of study.

The modern JSC campus is spread over 350 acres, and has 14 main buildings and several halls of residence. The university Library and Learning Center (LLC) has a collection of over 130,000 volumes and has received awards for its unique design.

Other notable campus buildings include the Wilson Bentley Science Hall, the Visual Arts Center, and the John Dewey Hall.

The university also maintains 1,000-acre Babcock Nature Preserve, which is primarily used for environmental sciences and field biology courses.

The university operates a well-established study abroad program and JSC students have been able to spend between a semester and a year studying at institutions all over the world, in countries such as France, New Zealand, Morocco, and Russia.

The university is also linked to the National Student Exchange (NSE), allowing students to study at one of over 200 higher education institutions in the United States and Canada.
