About Houghton College
Houghton College offers a Christian education in the liberal arts and is affiliated with the Wesleyan Church. The college was founded in 1883 as a seminary and high school for the people of the village of Houghton in New York state USA. The first college classes were offered in 1899 and the college received its charter from the state of New York in 1923. The college gained its West Seneca Campus in 1969 when it merged with the Buffalo Bible Institute and in 2004 they began awarding the first graduate degrees.
Today Houghton is a thriving liberal arts college with undergraduates studying a wide range of subjects. Students can immerse themselves in academic areas such as Arts and Letters, Religion and Global Service, Education, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Social Sciences and Music. The college is home to students from around 40 different countries and 30 different Christian denominations.
The rural campus covers 1,300 acres in the village of Houghton and its green lawns and tree-lined paths provide a calm, contemplative environment for students to study or to meet and relax. As well as the administrative and academic buildings the campus also holds the college’s four halls of residence and four ‘townhouses’. There are also sporting and leisure facilities available for students including baseball arenas and a multi-sport complex. There are also more than 25 official campus clubs and organisations for students to take part in.
