About Fort Valley State University
Fort Valley State University (FVSU), based in Georgia, is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.
There are more than 50 subjects offered by the university, as well as specialised master's degrees in education and counselling. Some of the most popular subjects offered at undergraduate level include: dentistry, education, counselling, physical education and business. FVSU is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
Furthermore, where applicable, degree programmes are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the National Association for the Education of Young Children. This ensures that all students are fully qualified when entering the professional world.
Athletic teams at FVSU participate in NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletics, and sports on offer include: men's basketball, cross country, football, tennis, and track and field, and women's basketball, cross country, softball, tennis, volleyball, and track and field. The school also competes as a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
There are numerous extracurricular activities associated with the university, which include: the marching band, concert choir, Baptist Student Union Choir, and cheerleading. There are more than 70 clubs on campus too.
There are media opportunities on campus too which include a newspaper called The Peachite which is entirely student written and produced. Moreover there is a radio station called WFVS-LP and a television station, so students have plenty to get involved with.
The Anderson House is the oldest building on campus and it is home to the Biggs Collection, which consists of period furnishings, silver, glassware, china, quilts, linens and civil war memorabilia all dated between 1860 and 1900.
Notable alumni include Catherine Hardy, who won a gold medal at the Olympic Games at Helsinki, Marquette King, an American football punter for the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League, and Tyrone Poole, a now retired American professional football player who played 13 seasons as a cornerback in the National Football League.
