About Eastern Nazarene College

Eastern Nazarene College can be found in Quincy, Massachusetts, although it opened its doors in Saratoga, New York, and was also located for some time in North Scituate, Rhode Island. Not only has the institution changed its location many times, it has also developed its teaching, evolving from a seminary to a liberal arts college.

However, one thing that has remained the same throughout its history is the college’s religious faith. It was opened in 1900 by Methodists under the name Pentecostal Collegiate Institute. The school later became primarily associated with the Church of the Nazarene, an offshoot of Methodism, and in 1971 it took on its current name.

Both Methodism and the Church of the Nazarene deeply value higher education. Eastern Nazarene College is one of over 50 Nazarene higher education institutions around the globe.

All faculty members at Eastern Nazarene College are practicing Christians, and around half of the undergraduate student body are members of the Church of the Nazarene. Students do not have to make a statement of faith in order to attend the college; however they are expected to attend 20 chapel services throughout the year and adhere to the Church’s moral code, which prohibits alcohol and drugs, among other things.

The college offers a liberal arts education with religious influence, and has been commended for its co-teaching of religion and science. Around 50 different majors and almost 60 minors are offered at Eastern Nazarene.

Quincy is a suburb of Boston, and is the hometown. It was selected as the location for the college because of its proximity to Harvard University.
