About Bloomfield College of Montclair State University
Bloomfield College is a private liberal arts institution in the township of Bloomfield in New Jersey USA. The college was founded in 1868 by the Presbyterian church in Newark as a seminary with the indention of serving the German speaking community of immigrants fleeing war and persecution in Europe.
The college moved to its present site in 1872 and was given approval to run four-year Bachelor’s degree programs in 1924. Over the years Bloomfield broadened the subjects on offer to students and its numbers have grown.
Bloomfield now has over 2000 students, most of whom are enrolled in undergraduate programs although the university does offer a master’s-level qualification in accounting. Many students live in the surrounding area and commute in to university but the recent increase in national and international students had lead to the college building two new residential facilities to keep up with growing demand.
Bloomfield prides itself on the diversity of its student body and is actively seeking to increase numbers of international students studying abroad there. The college’s Office of International Training and Professional Studies works in partnership with over 120 universities in 20 countries to help foreign and domestic students with English language courses, internships and camps.
The Bloomfield campus is about 15 miles from New York City. University buildings spread for several blocks centred around the college quad. As well as academic, administrative and residential buildings there is also the college library, the Robert V. Van Fossan theatre and sports and leisure facilities.
