It is not surprising that Montreal is a popular place for students to study. As Canada’s second most populous city and Quebec’s main metropolis, Montreal offers something for everyone.

Montreal is rich in French colonial history that dates back to the 16th century, and the majority of the city’s population speak French as their first language. In fact, Montreal is considered the second largest French-speaking city in the world, after Paris.

A stroll into the city’s historic centre, Old Montreal, is one of the best ways to soak up the city’s heritage. With its 16th-century architecture and quaint cobbled streets, Old Montreal is a popular tourist destination. The area also boasts attractions such as Montreal City Hall, the Old Port of Montreal, the Basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal, and the Bonsecours Market.

There are plenty of outdoor activities on offer in Montreal. For those who enjoy cycling, there is an extensive network of bike paths around the city. There is also more than 2,000 acres of parks including the renowned Mount Royal Park, which was designed by the same landscape architect as New York’s Central Park.

For foodies, there are six farmers’ markets in the city selling everything from fresh pastries to authentic poutine. This quintessential Canadian dish consists of fries smothered in cheese curds and gravy – a must-try! There are also more than 6,000 restaurants, making Montreal second only to New York for the most restaurants per capita in North America.

The city is known as Canada’s cultural centre and hosts a number of events throughout the year. These include the Just for Laughs Festival, the Montreal International Jazz Festival and the Canadian Grand Prix. It also hosts more than 100 annual music festivals such as Nuit Blanche and Osheaga. There are 250 dance and theatre companies around the city, as well as countless art galleries and museums.

In 2016 Montreal was declared a Unesco City of Design and became a member of the Unesco Creative Cities Network. Since then the city’s design industry has greatly developed and its international reputation has only improved.

Home to more than 50 research chairs, two English-language and two French-language universities, Montreal is an important hub for higher education. If you are interested in studying in this vibrant city, these are the best universities in Montreal according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021.
