About SUNY Geneseo

The State University of New York at Geneseo, commonly known as SUNY Geneseo, is a prestigious liberal arts institution in western New York.

Initially Wadsworth Normal and Training School, and then Geneseo Normal School, the college was founded in 1871 by James and William Wadsworth, a key part of the region’s ever-important agricultural industry.

Its residential 220-acre campus is in the old village of Geneseo, 35 miles south of Rochester and 60 miles east of Buffalo.

It runs over 50 courses at undergraduate level: comparative literature, geochemistry, political science, childhood education, economics, sociology, musical theatre and many more. Psychology, biological & biomedical sciences, management, marketing and education are among the most popular. Postgraduate courses include accounting, childhood multicultural education and adolescence education.

There are over 200 student organisations and 20 varsity teams, including ice hockey, basketball, swimming, softball, lacrosse, tennis and volleyball.

William Sadler, a film and television actor who starred in the Shawshank Redemption, Iron Man 3 and Roswell, Kodak CEO Jeff Clarke, Jackie Norris, an ex-chief of staff to Michelle Obama, and Curt Smith, formerly a speechwriter for president George H.W. Bush, are all SUNY Geneseo alumni.
