About Missouri Southern State University

With a main $75 million River Campus located in Cape Girardeau by the banks of the Mississippi, Southeast Missouri State University is a public institution that enrolled its first class of students in 1873.

Study at Southeast is divided between six colleges; Liberal Arts, Visual & Performing Arts, Business, Science & Agriculture, Education, and Health & Human Services. A centre for artistic performance at Southeast is the Conservatory of Theatre and Dance, which offers a professional training programme with BA and BFA degrees ranging from Acting to Theatre design.

After the uniquely spired the Normal Building, which was once described by Mark Twain as ‘peculiarly towered and pinnacled’ burned down in 1902, the educational centre of Southeast has been the Academic Hall Library. After extensive remodelling in 2008, this facility now contains a dedicated multimedia centre and quiet reading rooms.

Southeast offers study abroad programmes in 35 different countries and across a wide range of academic fields, for both short term faculty-led courses and academic exchange for up to a year. For international students wishing to take study at Southeast the university offers five week intensive English programmes prior to beginning your studies.

Sports teams at Southeast are known as the Redhawks, and compete in the NCAA Division I. There are five men’s programmes and eight women’s which include gymnastics, softball and volleyball. American football games are played at the Houck Stadium, which was opened in 1930 and can seat over 8000 spectators.

Among the most prominent alumni of Southeast are editor of Marvel comics Roy Thomas, astronaut Linda Godwin, the actor and TV personality known as Cedric the Entertainer, and Missouri politician Peter Kinder.

As well as the main Cape Girardeau campus, Southeast also has regional campuses in Kennett, Malden, and Sikeston.
