About Saint Mary's College

Saint Mary’s College is a Catholic, residential, women’s liberal arts college in Notre Dame, Indiana, USA. The college was founded in 1844 by four Sisters of the Holy Cross who had come from Le Mans to open a college in northern Indiana. The sisters ministered to the poor and the sick and taught orphan girls in their new school. In 1855 the school moved to a new campus, its present site. The college gained its charter in 1908, this was followed by a period of building work and expansion. In the 1930s the college gained the School of Sacred Theology as well as the Moreau Centre for the Arts. 

Today St. Mary’s is home to over 1,500 undergraduates studying a wide range of areas. The university offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Science degrees in over 30 major areas of study. There are also graduate options available including a Doctorate of Nursing Practice, Master of Science in Data Science, Master of Science in Speech Language Pathology.

The college campus covers 278 acres of landscaped lawns along the banks of the St. Joseph River. The campus features the Le Mans Hall, the oldest building in the college which serves as an administration centre and residence hall. There are also academic, residential, sporting and recreational buildings dotted around the campus as well as places for students to meet and relax.
