Times Higher Education’s annual summit focusing on the strength and potential of young universities will be held in partnership with the University of South Florida next month.

The THE Young Universities Summit will bring together senior university, government and industry leaders in Tampa from 5 to 7 June to explore how newer universities can use their relative youth to the greatest advantage.

Ghana’s former education minister Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang will deliver a keynote address on sustainable international university collaboration, while there will also be speeches from Andrew Hamilton, president of New York University; Lynn Pasquerella, president of the Association of American Colleges and Universities; Seunghwan Kim, director of the Institute for Edge of Theoretical Science at Pohang University of Science and Technology; and Rhonda Lenton, president of York University.

The summit will include the launch of THE’s series of Young University Rankings – including the “Golden Age” ranking of institutions founded since 1945 and a ranking of universities aged 50 years or younger – and a workshop on the effectiveness of international alliances of young universities and the feasibility of creating an alliance across Canada, the US and Mexico.

Panel discussions will explore how young universities can build reputations, distinguish themselves as alternative centres of excellence, support each other and form collaborations, work with industry, and provide strong student outcomes.

Confirmed speakers include Alain Fuchs, president of PSL University; Shiyi Chen, president of the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech); Rivka Carmi, president of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev; Renee Hindmarsh, chief executive of the Australian Technology Network of Universities; Pamela Gillies, vice-chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University; and Richard DeMillo, director of the Center for 21st Century Universities at Georgia Institute of Technology.
