On 23 June 2016, representatives from around 100 UK universities gathered in London for a Times Higher Education data symposium entitled The Global Higher Education Race: Staying Ahead of the Chasing Pack.

The event tackled two crucial issues for UK universities: their relative performance on the global stage at a time when higher education is becoming ever more competitive, and their performance within the UK on the measures to be assessed by the forthcoming teaching excellence framework (TEF).

It took place on the day THE published its modelling of the TEF, based on the government's proposed criteria.

Attendees were given an exclusive preview of a new "mock TEF" dataset, which combines benchmarked teaching metrics to give a picture of how UK universities may measure up in the forthcoming TEF.
