About University of Monastir
Established in 2004 as part of a series of reforms being made to university education, the University of Monastir is today a major university in Tunisia and it plays a central role in preparing future generations for high-ranking positions in a wide range of fields.
Made up of two schools, five faculties and nine institutes, the university is situated in both the touristic city of Monastir as well as the fishing town of Mahdia, and the university-led institutions strive to make a contribution to the societies of the region. Monastir has produced some notable people in Tunisian history, including three former Prime Ministers in addition to international footballer Jawhar Mnari.
A large number of students are enrolled at the University of Monastir, although it is actually one of the smaller public universities in Tunisia. Students of the University of Monastir are encouraged to engage in cultural and sports-related activities, and the university operates almost 50 clubs covering a range of interests and hobbies.
International ties are central to the philosophy of the University of Monastir, and bilateral agreements with universities in France, Spain, Belgium, Algeria, Morocco as well as other Tunisian universities, have been established. The university is also part of the Erasmus programme, allowing student and academic exchange between other, primarily European, universities.
