About Kanagawa University
Established as the Yokohama Academy in 1928, it then became Yokohama College and was set up as Kanagawa University in 1949, following post-war reforms.
The main campus is located in Rokkakubashi, Kanagawa-ku (Yokohama campus) however, there is also another campus, Shonan-Hiratsuka. It comprises seven faculties, 20 departments, two programmes and nine graduate schools. There are also several affiliated junior and senior schools.
Faculties include law, economics, business administration, foreign languages, human sciences, science and engineering. The faculty of science and business administration are both based at the Shonan Hiratsuka Campus.
Kanagawa University have set up several specialised, high-level research institutes to advance research in the following areas: legal studies, economics and foreign trade, international business and management, humanities, integrated science, technological research and Japanese folk culture.
It promotes academic and cultural exchanges through universities all over the world and is engaged in active agreements with 101 partner institutions and 13 partner programmes in 29 countries across Asia, Central America and Europe.
Bi-annually, in summer and winter, the university hosts a short-term intensive Japanese language programme for foreign students, often to help them prepare for their term at Kanagawa University.
A 20-minute ride from central Tokyo, the port city of Yokohama is the second largest city in Japan by population (approximately 3.7 million), following Tokyo. It became Japan’s most important port city after the end of the country’s isolation in the mid-19th century and alongside Kobe, Osaka, Nagoya, Hakata, Tokyo and Chiba, it is one of the most important Japanese commercial hubs.
