About Hamburg University of Technology

Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) is one of the newest universities in Germany, inaugurated in 1982 in Harburg, south Hamburg.

Its roots can be traced back to the 1920s, when plans were made for a university of technology in the Süderelbe region of Hamburg. However, it was not until 1978 that the Hamburg University of Technology opened.

TUHH’s main focus is engineering, with practice-based degrees ranging from classic engineering areas such as civil and environmental engineering, to newer fields such as process and bioprocess engineering. Other subjects on offer include technomathematics, and logistics and mobility.

The original campus buildings are in the south of Hamburg, but it has gradually extended northwards. Students avail themselves of the many links with influential businesses and companies in such an important industrial port.

Teaching and research are conducted through separate administrations. Double-degrees are available in conjunction with the Northern Institute of Technology (NIT), a private business school in Hamburg, where students study an MSc in an engineering programme at TUHH and an MBA or Master of Technology Management at the NIT. The MBA, taught in English, includes training in soft skills, law, and a foreign language.

The Centre of Research and Innovation has three main focuses: green technologies, which focuses on renewable energies, life science technologies, which looks at societal problems in healthcare and medical technology, and aviation and maritime systems, which explores aviation and marine technology.

In 2013, the TUHH created the Graduate Academy for Technology and Innovation to support early stage researchers.

Some courses are available in English, and a preparatory German course is offered at the start of the course to those for whom German is a second language.
