About Hamamatsu University School of Medicine

Established in 1974, Hamamatsu University School of Medicine is located in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Japan (population approximately: 780,000). Its three aims are to train clinicians and researchers, promote original research and the innovation of medical techniques and be instrumental in treating local patients.

The university’s onsite hospital was founded in 1977 and is frequented by many of the local residents from the Shizuoka prefecture. The Fujinokuni Women Doctor Support Centre, which is one of a kind in the region, was recently inaugurated, with the purpose of cultivating more positive working environments for women.

A global demonstration base for IMS (Imaging Mass Spectometry) was introduced in 2016, in order to standardise IMS techniques in Asia, through collaborations with IMS bases in the Germany and the United States.

Its admission policy is highly selective; students must pass all entrance exams and expect their past academic records to be closely scrutinised. Of those who apply, 20-30 per cent are accepted to study.

The campus is based 10.6km from Hamamatsu train station, the equivalent of a 35-minute drive away. Recreational facilities available to students include a swimming pool, martial arts hall, gymnasium, a library and kyudo ground.

The Hamamatsu University School of Medicine has welcomed international students from China, Bangladesh, Vietnam and India, as well as setting up exchanges with universities in Korea, Poland, Turkey and Germany.
