About Godfrey Okoye University
Godfrey Okoye University is a Catholic University in Enugu, Nigeria, and was founded in 2009. It is the first university in Africa to be owned by a Catholic Diocese. The university’s mission is to offer quality education that contributes to a strong personality, ensuring the promotion of religious and epistemological dialogue. The university was named after Godfrey Okoye, a bishop of the Roman Catholic church in Nigeria. He also became the second Bishop of Enugu.
Undergraduate and postgraduate courses are offered in the faculties of: arts; education; law; natural and applied sciences and management and social science.
Godfrey Okoye University has several international partnerships with universities, working in research and student education. These include the University of Nigeria, Birmingham City University and Bowie State University. The university also works with international businesses such as Globeethics.net, the Catholic Institute for Development Justice and Peace, BASF, UNESCO and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.
The university has accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Legal Council of Education. They have also produced graduates that went on to join the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme in their graduation year.
Enugu is located in Southeastern Nigeria, its name derived from "hilltop". The city got its name from Enugwu Ngwo, a town under which coal was found. The city’s industries include bottling, and it is also a filming location for the Nigerian film industry.
