Institutions in Japan can now submit data for the Japan University Rankings, jointly produced by Times Higher Education and Benesse Corporation.

The ranking will be based on data covering the Japanese academic year of 2023 (April 2023 to March 2024), and the data collection portal will be open until 31 October 2024. The results will be published in spring 2025.

In the most recent Japan University Rankings, published in 2023, Tohoku University took the top spot, followed by the University of Tokyo and Osaka University, in second and third place, respectively.

Having previously been an annual table, the Japan University Rankings will now be published every other year.

The ranking uses 16 performance indicators grouped into four key areas: resources, engagement, outcomes and environment. The ranking includes data submitted by universities, bibliometric data from Elsevier and data from four surveys, gathering the views of students, academics, high school advisers and employers.
